SUGAR SAYS: FRESH SHEETS, FRESH START

First start with a breath…

Take a deep breath.
Breathe in the fresh air.
Breathe out the frustration, stress, and exhaustion.
Welcome to The Pasture.

Sugar — Pampering Correspondent
Comfort enthusiast. Firm believer that care shouldn’t wait until something hurts.

AT THE GATE

Sometimes the Farm Moms come home and we're just done.

The animals still need dinner. Water buckets need checking. Somebody has knocked something over. Somebody else is yelling from the barn as though they haven't eaten in approximately six months.

Eventually, everyone is fed, watered, checked, and settled.

Then we walk into the house and see the laundry.

Sugar would like us to keep walking.

Because sometimes what you need after taking care of everybody else all day is to deliberately take care of yourself.

WHAT WE'RE DOING: PAMPERING AFTER A LONG DAY

Pampering doesn't have to mean an expensive spa, fancy products, or an entire free afternoon.

It can simply mean doing something ordinary with a little extra care.

Tonight, we're turning bedtime into something worth looking forward to.

No waiting until you're completely exhausted. No deciding you haven't accomplished enough yet.

You're allowed to be comfortable simply because you're tired and you're home.

TRY THIS: FRESH-SHEET NIGHT

Strip the bed and put on clean sheets.

Take a warm shower or bath.

If you want an extra bit of luxury, put your towel or pajamas in the dryer for a few minutes so they're warm when you're ready for them.

Make your favorite tea or another comforting drink.

Turn down the lights.

Put away the phone.

Then climb into your freshly made bed a little earlier than usual.

Nothing else is required.

Don't turn it into a wellness challenge. Don't track it. Don't make a list of the five things you're grateful for unless you actually want to.

Just enjoy being comfortable.

WHERE DOES THIS COME FROM?

Humans have used bathing and bedtime rituals for thousands of years. Across different cultures, bathing has been connected with cleanliness, hospitality, relaxation, religious ritual, and transitions between parts of the day. Today we also know that repeating a calming bedtime routine can help create a transition between the activity of the day and sleep. But Sugar's version is much less complicated. Sometimes your body has spent all day doing things for everybody else. Do something nice for it.

FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH

Sugar didn't always receive the care she deserved. Before coming to the farm, she had been ridden while injured. Her leg needed a long period of recovery, and an old injury left her partially blind. These days, Sugar is very interested in comfort. A slow grooming. A good scratch. Plenty of time to eat. A comfortable place to rest. And absolutely no rushing just because a human has decided something needs to happen immediately. Sugar has learned that care doesn't have to begin only after something goes wrong. That's something humans aren't particularly good at. We tend to wait until we're exhausted before resting, overwhelmed before taking a break, or hurting before paying attention to ourselves.

Sugar's rule is:

Don't wait until something hurts to start taking care of it.

The laundry will still be there tomorrow.

Sugar checked.
